Growing Deathcare Literacy
Toolkit Resources & Appendices
Practical resources to help communities care for the dying — and those who love them.
This toolkit is designed to build confidence, clarity, and compassionate skill around end-of-life care. Whether you are forming a volunteer team, supporting a loved one, or educating your broader community, these materials offer structured guidance and accessible tools.
Each toolkit includes:
Inward Education — Training materials for volunteer teams and organizers
Outward Education — Workshop guides, handouts, worksheets, and community-facing resources
This work was made possible through a generous grant from
The Frederick P. Lenz Foundation for American Buddhism

The project is fiscally sponsored by
The Shambhala Center of Seattle

The toolkits were designed by Meli-Tashi Happy, a death doula and Community Deathcare Coordinator for Seattle Shambhala Center, and reviewed by peers working in the field of deathcare. They are currently shared for trial use in local communities.
This is a living project. Materials will continue to evolve, expand, and refine over time.
Our long-term vision is to broaden the reach of this education — strengthening communities through skillful, compassionate engagement with death and dying.
